A buyer is being sought for a plant nursery based in the East Midlands after the company fell into administration. Opperman Plants was incorporated in 1997 and supplies a wide range of retail and trade customers across the UK.
The Spalding, Lincolnshire-based company has experienced a series of financial challenges over recent years, including rising costs and the loss of key customers. In the face of these issues, the company’s directors sought professional advice, before ultimately taking steps to place the business into administration in an effort to protect the interests of its creditors.
Following their appointment, the company’s joint administrators are continuing to trade the business while they undertake a sale process. Discussions are underway with interested parties over a deal to sell the business and its assets as a going concern, with a number of offers reportedly having been received.
While one employee has been made redundant, the remaining 40 staff have been retained.
One of the joint administrators said that Opperman Plants was a “long-established and well-regarded business with strong operational foundations and a diversified sales model”, adding that it continued to trade and fulfil customer demand, despite the series of challenges it has faced.
The joint administrator continued: "We are encouraged by the level of interest received and are working closely with a number of parties to secure a going concern sale. Our priority is to secure the best possible outcome for all stakeholders, including maintaining continuity of the business and safeguarding jobs where possible."
In accounts for the year to December 31 2023, Opperman Plants Limited’s fixed assets were valued at £3.1 million and current assets at £3.3 million, with net assets amounting to £1.8 million.
