Frog Bikes, a major manufacturer of lightweight children’s bicycles, has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators. The Berkshire-headquartered business, which has its main factory in Pontypool, said that it had faced "significant and well-documented challenges" that had also affected customers and manufacturers across the UK and Europe.
The company had seen a period of exceptional growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching the peak of its prominence when Prince Louis was photographed on one of its bicycles in April 2021.
According to Frog Bikes, it remains the "clear market leader" in the UK premium children’s bikes space and, despite the challenging market conditions, has seen increased demand over recent months. The business also has a strong international presence, supplying to more than 35 global markets.
Explaining its financial difficulties, the company said in a statement: "Pandemic-era demand led to increased production commitments across the industry, which were later impacted by global supply-chain disruption, rising input and logistics costs, and extended lead times.”
“These pressures were compounded by the effects of Brexit, which added further complexity, cost, and uncertainty to international trade and distribution. Recent increases in the cost of employment have further squeezed the business, whilst consumer confidence and discretionary spending remain low.”
"At the same time, tighter financial markets and reduced access to funding made it increasingly difficult for growing manufacturing businesses to secure the requisite working capital required to navigate these challenges.”
According to the company, it has explored a range of options, but has so far been unable to secure a strategic investment partner aligned with the brand’s long-term vision and values.
The firm adds that it will continue to search for a suitable partner and that the administration notice will provide stability and short-term protection while it continues to assess its funding and restructuring options. It will also continue trading during the process.
In accounts for the year to February 29 2024, Frog Bikes Limited reported turnover of £5.9 million, down from approximately £9.5 million a year earlier, but moved from an operating loss of over £122,000 to a profit of more than £351,000.
At the time, its fixed assets were valued at £541,159 and current assets at around £6.4 million, with total equity amounting to £1.2 million.
