Administrators have been appointed at regional carrier Eastern Airways (UK) Ltd and associated company Air Kilroe Ltd, as efforts begin to secure a buyer for all or part of the business. The airline, founded in 1997 and based at Humberside Airport, operated scheduled and charter flights across the UK and Europe.
The appointment follows the termination of a key contract with KLM Cityhopper, which had seen Eastern operate several aircraft on behalf of the Dutch airline. The loss of that agreement, combined with high fixed costs and a decline in charter demand, left the company unable to continue trading.
Jamie Miller and Gareth Harris of RSM UK Restructuring Advisory have been appointed joint administrators and are seeking a rescue deal or sale of assets. A small number of staff have been retained to maintain aircraft and support ongoing operations while options are explored. Interested parties are being invited to submit expressions of interest in acquiring the airline’s assets, which include aircraft, route rights, and potential public service obligation contracts.
The administrators said that Eastern Airways’ financial position had become unsustainable following the end of the KLM arrangement. The company had previously operated a mix of scheduled services and ad-hoc charter flights for business, energy, and sporting clients but had faced mounting cost pressures in recent months.
This development places the airline in a distressed sale situation, with opportunities for trade buyers or investors to acquire aviation assets or existing operating permissions at reduced value, subject to regulatory approval.
Eastern Airways’ collapse highlights the continued financial pressures on the UK regional aviation sector, where operators face rising fuel and staffing costs, intense competition, and vulnerability to the loss of major contracts.
