West Yorkshire furniture manufacturer Moores Furniture Group has fallen into administration amid challenging trading conditions, rising costs and weak housebuilding activity. The group’s customer list and intellectual property assets have been sold to Wren Kitchens in a pre-pack deal.
Based in Wetherby and founded in 1947, Moores Furniture Group supplies kitchen and bathroom furniture to housebuilders, affordable housing developers, the public sector and retail customers including DIY chains and building merchants.
Despite its prominent position in the industry, the group has faced several years of challenging trading conditions. While the group has made strong progress in ongoing cost reduction and market share growth, these issues have been compounded by rising input costs and low levels of housebuilding activity.
In the year ending December 31 2024, the group reported turnover of £58.1 million, down from £63.4 million a year earlier, while operating losses increased from around £4.7 million to £5.8 million. At the time, its fixed assets were valued at £3.4 million and current assets at £14.4 million, but net liabilities totalled £26.6 million.
Directors explored options including a potential sale and investment, but, with no solvent solutions available, the decision was made to appoint administrators. James Clark and Will Wright of Interpath Advisory were appointed as joint administrators to Moores Furniture Group Limited on January 19 2021.
Immediately upon their appointment, the joint administrators concluded a sale of the group’s customer list and certain other IP assets to Wren Kitchens subsidiary Wren Trade Kitchens Limited. 124 jobs have been made redundant from the approximately 500-strong workforce, with 336 staff initially retained to help reduce disruption during the process.
The joint administrators will continue to operate Moores Furniture Group’s facility for a short period to work through certain work in progress.
Joint administrator and Interpath Advisory Managing Director James Clark said: "The strong headwinds facing the UK construction industry continue to have an impact on companies up and down the supply chain.”
"Against this backdrop, we are pleased to have been able to secure a transaction which provides an opportunity to minimise disruption for customers and suppliers, and which will enable Moores' heritage in kitchen manufacturing to continue as part of the Wren family."
