An operator of petrol station forecourts and convenience stores has secured an eight-figure funding package to support acquisitions as it seeks to grow its portfolio of sites across the Midlands and North East.
Headquartered in Middlesbrough, the Samy Group operates locations for several high-profile convenience brands including Budgens, Morrisons and Londis. The group’s current portfolio comprises 64 sites, including directly operated petrol filling stations, commission operator sites and convenience stores.
The company has now secured a new £15 million funding package from HSBC UK, which will enable it to grow to more than 100 locations by 2028.
The funding package will support acquisitions, as well as enabling investment in consolidating intercompany loans and refreshing the company’s existing stores, following a period of rapid growth.
Mohan Palanisamy, owner of Samy Group (pictured above), commented: “This is our first external investment, and while the business has been growing strongly, this funding will significantly accelerate our ability to scale sustainably.”
"It will also allow us to enhance the efficiency of our existing operations through a programme of store upgrades. With the support of HSBC UK, we now have the capital to pursue larger acquisitions and strengthen our position as a major convenience store and PFS operator.”
Zareen Smith, Global Relationship Director at HSBC UK, added: "This funding represents a fantastic opportunity for Samy Group at a time when consumer shopping habits continue to evolve. We look forward to supporting the team as they pursue further acquisitions and build on their already impressive portfolio."
Investment is surging in UK roadside real estate assets such as forecourts and service stations, with investors attracted by long-lease infrastructure opportunities, the growth of EV charging, food and retail offerings, persistent demand for petrol station filling sites and the widespread scope for consolidation in a highly fragmented market.
