Corbel Partners, a UK-wide independent financial adviser (IFA) network based in the North West, has secured more than £10 million in acquisition funding. The funding from Beechbrook Capital will help to drive a major five-year acquisition programme.
Headquartered in Warrington, Corbel Partners employs over 50 staff and generates turnover of around £24 million. It comprises a network of more than 180 IFAs, collectively managing £2.4 billion in client assets.
The deal will fund acquisitions from both inside and outside Corbel’s network to bolster its IFA offering. It is forecast that this will enable the company to double its employee headcount, expand its network to nearly 450 advisers and push business turnover past the £60 million mark.
David O’Hara, director at Corbel Partners, said that the company had seen “a significant period of change and growth” over the past three years, against what he called “a backdrop of upheaval in the industry driven by regulation and poorly executed consolidation.”
O’Hara added that the partnership with Beechbrook would enable Corbel Partners “to continue to offer attractive alternative solutions for independent financial advisers and their clients including a very competitive retirement buy-out plan which will mean that our ambitious plans can be achieved.”
The transaction was advised on by Shaw & Co’s Manchester office. Dan Martin, partner at Shaw & Co, described the transaction as “a large, complex and innovative deal that provides the ideal platform for Corbel’s continued growth.”
Martin said that there was currently “an extraordinary wave of M&A activity in this historically fragmented sector which is affording an array of opportunities for those looking to grow or finally exit their business.”
He continued: “We are working on a number of mandates to raise funding for businesses in this sector with significant appetite from across the lending market to support high quality, recurring revenue businesses like Corbel.”
Beechbrook Capital’s Head of UK Investments Richard Smart said that the UK IFA industry “continues to demonstrate strong fundamentals and a clear opportunity for thoughtful consolidation”, adding that businesses in the sector can create lasting value by “aligning patient capital with a clear strategy”.
Corbel Partners was founded by Paul Heath and David O’Hara in 2004. It provides members with access to FinPath, its in-house software platform, as well as advice and support on compliance, regulatory guidance, training, paraplanning and administration.
Advisers within the network offer a range of independent financial advice, covering financial planning, retirement planning, savings and investment, financial protection and mortgage advice. Additionally, Corbel Partners also has its own IFA proposition under the Mandarin Wealth brand, working with business owners and individuals across the UK.
