Scottish law firm Brodies is expanding into Leeds through the acquisition of Barton Legal. The acquisition gives Brodies its second office in England, as well as its first outside of London, and comes as the firm seeks to build out its construction practice.
Founded in 2012, Barton Legal is a law firm specialising in property, construction and engineering. The eight-strong incoming Barton Legal team includes partner and founder Bill Barton, a specialist in contentious and non-contentious construction law with more than 30 years’ experience.
Brodies LLP Managing Partner Stephen Goldie said that the company now serves a growing number of construction sector clients within the North of England and across the UK more broadly.
Following the acquisition, Brodies will move into its new Leeds offices, the recently refurbished eighth floor of 7 Park Row, on a five-year lease. The move was brokered by James Jackson of property consultancy Carter Towler.
Jackson said that the arrival of Brodies at the property was “a resounding endorsement of the comprehensive multi-million-pound refurbishment which has just been completed at this special building.”
Jackson said the refurbishment of the offices had created “Grade A, amenity driven, fully fitted and CAT A office suites [...] in the heart of Leeds’s professional core."
Elizabeth Ridler, partner with the Leeds office of property consultancy Knight Frank, the joint marketing agent of 7 Park Row, said that the property had a “new reception featuring soft seating, breakout areas and touchdown space, as well as upgraded amenities including a gym, fitness studio, showers, lockers and changing facilities”.
Ridler added: “We have also launched the marketing of basement floor which will provide around 10,000 sq ft of space suitable for a variety of uses including leisure, medical and education. The newly configured space will have a capacity for up to 200 people and will be accessed via a new highly prominent double height entrance on Park Row.”
In the year ending April 30 2025, Brodies LLP reported turnover of £126.6 million, up from £114.3 million a year earlier, while operating profits increased from £49.3 million to approximately £50.7 million.
