Fishers, a longstanding Birmingham property management agency, has made its first acquisition with a deal for a local counterpart. The Harborne-based firm has acquired local agency Whittle Estates & Property Services, helped by the backing of a Midlands Engine Investment Fund II loan.
The £345,000 loan from the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II, delivered through fund manager Frontier Development Capital (FDC), will assist management in integrating the two businesses and continuing Fishers’ expansion.
Established in Birmingham city centre in 1913, Fishers built its business through property lettings in the city’s Edwardian suburbs. Remaining under family ownership for more than 80 years, the company was acquired by long-term employees Dean Taylor and Kay Venables in a 2020 Management Buyout.
Since the MBO, the company has continued to expand, recently opening a second office in Stourbridge to facilitate further growth and enable the firm to serve the Black Country. Prior to the acquisition, Fishers employed 12 staff and managed around 600 properties for more than 250 landlords.
The acquisition of Whittles Estate & Property Services takes the firm to around 750 properties, managed on behalf of more than 350 landlords. The deal will also enable Whittle’s owners to focus on property sales business Hadleigh Estate Agents.
Ryan Cartwright of Frontier Capital Development called Fishers “a stalwart of the Birmingham property scene”, adding that, under the ownership of Taylor and Venables, the company had “entered a new phase of growth.”
Following the acquisition, Fishers’ Kay Venables said: "Dean and I are keen to expand the Fishers brand while continuing to provide the same personal service. Fishers has retained the ethos and values of a family business and we have Fisher family members amongst our client base.”
David Tindall, Senior Investment Manager at the British Business Bank, added: "The Midlands Engine Investment Fund II backs businesses and supports them to achieve sustainable growth. We look forward to seeing an established and fully integrated company like Fishers, with a proud heritage spanning over a century, continue to build on its success.”
