Powder Monkey Group, an international brewing and hospitality group headquartered in Gosport, has strengthened its presence in the North East of England with the acquisition of a brewery based in County Durham.
The group, which has acquired an additional six breweries during 2025, has now moved for Houghton Le Spring-based Maxim Brewery. The deal builds on Powder Monkey’s acquisition of another brewery based in the region, Castle Eden Brewery, earlier in the year.
Following the acquisition of Maxim Brewery, Powder Monkey Group now owns five key brands in the UK, with a physical presence covering the South, Midlands and North East. The group also has a presence in Australia, Hong Kong and Gibraltar and is set to open new brewing capacity in the suburbs of Sydney next year.
Maxim Brewery Managing Director Mark Anderson said: "Maxim Brewery was formed following the closure of Vaux Breweries in 1999.”
The company, which opened its Houghton Le Spring Brewery in 2006, is well-known in the North East for beers including Double Maxim, Samson, Lambtons, Swedish Blonde as well as a number of other seasonal beers.
Mark Anderson added that joining Powder Monkey Group would ensure that the company’s brands would continue to be brewed in the North East.
Praising the strength of Maxim Brewery’s brands, Powder Monkey Group Chief Executive Andy Burdon said: "We're proud to have added the Maxim Brewery and established brands to the Powder Monkey Portfolio. It has a fiercely loyal customer base, and we will continue in this tradition.”
Powder Monkey Group has also recently announced the appointment of new UK Managing Director Jon Radford. Announcing Radford’s appointment, Group Chairman Mike McGeever commented: “The Group has grown six-fold this year via significant organic growth and acquisitions. With the UK currently being the largest part of the business, bringing in somebody of Jon's calibre and experience is a strong signal that Powder Monkey intends to both continue its growth and identify further opportunities.
