BI Halder & Son Limited, a haulage firm based in East Yorkshire, has been rescued in a pre-pack sale after falling into administration. The Driffield-based company provides a full range of services to the agricultural sector, as well as modern bulk storage, drying and testing facilities.
The company, which has been trading for more than 50 years, ran into difficulties due to pressures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. It was then hit by increases in fuel and other running costs as a result of the war in Ukraine.
Running costs were further impacted by interest hikes, which put even greater pressure on the company’s already stretched cashflow position. A refinance deal was put in place to solve these issues, but was not enough to secure the company’s future and a pre-pack sale strategy was agreed.
Sean Williams and Phil Deyes of Leonard Curtis were appointed as joint administrators to BI Halder & Son Limited on October 8 2025 and immediately secured a pre-pack sale of the business to Halder Transport & Storage Limited, safeguarding all 45 jobs at the company.
Joint Administrator Sean Williams said: “BI Halder & Son Ltd had established a great reputation over five decades and by facilitating a successful sale we have protected jobs and maximised realisations for the Company’s creditors.”
Director Louise Halder commented: “Our priority was to retain our loyal workforce and continue providing high quality haulage and storage services for our customers. Building in resilience for future challenges has also been important.”
BI Halder & Son was the third haulage business that Sean Williams of Leonard Curtis has dealt with since May 2025 and he stated that the majority of SME hauliers are currently operating under strain.
While the industry “remains essential and busy,” Williams said, “most are running businesses with higher operating costs, on thin margins, and a rising number of insolvencies indicate performance is fragile rather than robust.”
He continued: “A minority of hauliers, those with strong contracts, niches, cleaner fleets or some digital advantage, are doing better. Overall, we should expect continued pressure and gradual consolidation unless economic conditions or targeted policy support materially improve.”
M&A activity has been somewhat sluggish in the UK logistics sector this year, but acquisitive appetite remains high
