A historic Warrington lawnmower and garden equipment business has been forced to close, leaving staff redundant and local customers without their usual service.
Duttons Mowers supplied and repaired ride-on mowers, strimmers, chainsaws and hand-held blowers and had built a reputation for reliability in the area.
The 135 year-old business faced rising costs, including increases to Employers National Insurance, minimum wage and reduced commercial property rates relief.
This, combined with lower demand over the unusually good summer, left the company unable to continue trading.
Manchester-based Landwood Group has been appointed to oversee a short-notice online auction of the company’s stock, vehicles and workshop equipment.
More than 100 lots are going under the hammer, including a Ford Transit van, ride-on mowers, blowers, strimmers, chainsaws, spare parts and workshop repair equipment.
Brands include Stihl, Honda, Weibang, Flymo, Cobra, Segway, Cub Cadet, Hayter and Toro.
Duttons Mowers was run by a small team of six. Sean Coulton and Paul Dean led the business, taking over from the previous generation in 2023 and were fifth generation owners.
Mark Bailey, partner at Landwood Group, said:“It’s always tough seeing a small local business like this close. The team at Duttons worked hard to keep things going and it’s a shame that circumstances beyond their control meant they couldn’t continue.
“As trusted experts in insolvency plant and machinery sales, our priority is to manage the auction with care, giving the stock a second life with buyers who can put it to good use.”
Viewing will take place at Riverside House, Howley Lane, Howley, Warrington WA1 2DN
on Thursday 18 September from 10am to 4pm.
The online auction closes on Wednesday 24 September with all goods cleared by appointment between 29th and 30th September.
This well-established business provides teaching assistants, teachers, and nursery workers to over 60 schools and nurseries, boasting a remarkable 90% candidate retention rate due to attractive employment benefits.
Here's an enticing opportunity to acquire a thriving plant, tool, and equipment hire business with a solid 20-year trading history in the South West, boasting around 900 active customers and an impressive 90% retention rate.
This is a unique opportunity to acquire a company with expert capabilities in the construction and energy sectors, supported by strong client relationships and a skilled management team.
