Barkley Plastics Limited, a Birmingham-based plastics business, has been acquired by a counterpart after falling into administration last month. Founded in 1965, Barkley Plastics was a specialist in injection moulding.
Begbies Traynor partners Mark Malone and Gareth Prince were appointed as joint administrators of the company in August following a period of difficult trading. Immediately upon their appointment, approximately 40 staff were made redundant, with a much-reduced workforce retained to wind down the company’s operations.
After the company fell into administration, a significant number of parties were reported to have registered an interest in the business and its assets, leading to an urgent sale process being triggered in an effort to rescue the business and its remaining staff.
The business and assets have now been acquired by Clarity Plastics, preserving the remaining jobs at the company and ensuring that manufacturing continues for Barkley’s long-standing customer base.
Clarity Plastics Managing Director Kevin Robinson said that Barkley Plastics was “a very well regarded name in Midlands manufacturing and adds significant strength to our growing plastics division.”
He continued: "Speed was vital to complete this deal and we're grateful to the administrators for having acted urgently to make it possible. The deal preserves as many jobs as possible as well as an important part of the supply chain for businesses that supplied and bought from Barkley Plastics.”
Joint administrator Mark Malone said: Malone said: "After a difficult period, the sale of Barkley Plastics to Clarity Plastics is very positive news that should help preserve the company’s rich history as part of the manufacturing sector in the Midlands. We are very pleased to have helped achieve this outcome given the challenging circumstances and remaining employees can now look forward to the future as part of a larger group.”
"This outcome was possible due to excellent customer relationships established over many years, the willingness of a buyer to move quickly, and importantly, the effort and support of those staff retained during the administration period. I wish the new owners the very best for the future."
In accounts for the year to August 31 2024, Barkley Plastics’ fixed assets were valued at slightly over £368,000 and current assets at £1.7 million, with net assets amounting to approximately £990,000.
