An accountancy firm based in Kent has strengthened its presence in the region with the acquisition of a Tonbridge-based counterpart. Spurling Cannon’s acquisition of longstanding Tonbridge firm Cantium Accountants means the firm now employs more than 70 staff.
Founded in 2002, Cantium Accountants has been sold to Spurling Cannon after founder Andrew Bradley (pictured above, left, with Spurling Cannon director Sam Graham) decided to retire. Following the acquisition, the Cantium Accountants team will remain in place, ensuring continuity for the firm’s clients.
Spurling Cannon director Sam Graham will now lead the office, with all staff transferring to the buyer and Graham now overseeing the company’s growth in the West Kent area. As a result of the acquisition, Spurling Cannon now has three offices across Tonbridge, Ramsgate and Ashford, with turnover of more than £4 million.
Spurling Cannon was founded by Jonathan Spurling and Andrew Cannon in 2003 and since then has growth both organically and through a number of strategic acquisitions, including the takeovers of Cliftonville-based Alexandra Baker and Broadstairs firm W Fowles & Co.
Director Sam Graham said that Tonbridge was “a key strategic location” for Spurling Cannon and that the acquisition “strengthens our coverage across Kent and brings us closer to many of our clients in the west of the county.”
Graham added that Spurling Cannon “see strong potential for growth here, and we’re investing in expanding the local team."
Spurling Cannon co-founder Andrew Cannon described the acquisition as one that "fits perfectly with our vision of sustainable, relationship-led growth", adding: "It’s about combining scale and structure with the personal service that defines who we are."
Cantium Accountants founder Andrew Bradley said that it was clear from initial conversations that Spurling Cannon shared the company’s values, stating that both firms “have the same focus on client relationships and quality service”.
Bradley added that he was confident that Cantium’s clients would benefit from the broader expertise and resources offered by the Spurling Cannon team.
