Wholesaler Kitwave has acquired South West-based foodservice company Charles Saunders in a deal that supports its long-term growth strategy. The company now joins Kitwave’s foodservice division, alongside Total Foodservice, Creed Foodservice, WestCountry Food Holdings and Fife Creamery, and will also become part of the Country Range Group.
Founded in 1968, Yate-headquartered Charles Saunders has established itself as one of the South West’s largest family-owned foodservice groups, expanding its regional presence over recent years through strategic acquisitions and organic growth.
Following the acquisition by Kitwave, the company’s existing leadership team will remain in place, while Darren Gaulton has been appointed Executive Director and Kim Carwardine becomes Managing Director.
The company will continue trading under the Charles Saunders brand and there will be no changes to its depot, operations, sales or head office teams. The firm’s customers and suppliers will continue to work with the same teams, with no changes to day-to-day operations.
Darren Gaulton said that the business had attained a strong reputation over the years for its customer-first approach, investment in people and its high levels of service.
According to Gaulton, joining Kitwave represents the next stage of the company's growth journey, following significant expansion in recent years.
He continued: “Our priority has always been to ensure the business is well placed for long-term sustainable growth. This partnership gives us an excellent platform to continue to build, invest further in our people and continue delivering the exceptional service our customers expect.”
Ben Maxted, CEO at Kitwave Wholesale Group, said: “Charles Saunders is a highly respected foodservice business with an outstanding reputation across the South West, a loyal customer base and an experienced management team.”
"Its customer-focused approach and strong family values make it an excellent fit for the Kitwave Group. The acquisition further strengthens our foodservice division and supports our long-term growth strategy.”
In accounts for the year to September 30 2025, Charles Saunders reported turnover of £24.5 million, up by 3.6 per cent from approximately £23.7 million a year earlier. However, the company fell to an operating loss of slightly over £127,000, down from a profit of £2.6 million the previous year, as a result of the director being paid a bonus rather than a dividend.
