London machine learning firm Cinemersive Labs acquired in acqui-hire and IP play

California-based Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has acquired London-based machine learning and computer vision company Cinemersive Labs, in a transaction aimed at advancing visual computing within PlayStation's gameplay experiences.

Cinemersive Labs was founded in 2022 and built an international team based in the UK with specialist expertise in machine learning and computer vision. The company developed technology for immersive visual experiences, concentrating its work on the conversion of two-dimensional imagery into navigable three-dimensional environments.

Its principal asset is a patent-pending six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) volumetric pipeline - a system that takes two-dimensional photographs and video footage as input and generates navigable three-dimensional volumetric spaces as output. The pipeline is designed to operate from standard two-dimensional source material rather than requiring purpose-built capture hardware, a feature that broadens its potential applications in both game development and runtime rendering.

The technology had moved beyond the research stage before the acquisition. Cinemersive Labs released Parallax, a consumer application available on Meta Quest, which allowed users to navigate three-dimensional scenes reconstructed from photographs. The app served as a public demonstration of the pipeline operating as a deployable, commercial product.

Cinemersive Labs was co-founded by Dr Victor Lempitsky, a leading researcher in computer vision whose academic work has accumulated more than 62,000 citations. Dr Lempitsky previously led Samsung's AI Centre in Moscow, where his research covered neural rendering, generative models, and volumetric reconstruction, before establishing Cinemersive Labs in 2022.

The company raised equity across five funding rounds between its founding and March 2025. No information is available on the terms of the acquisition, which was announced on 2 April 2026 and completed by 14 May 2026.

For SIE, the transaction extends a programme of machine learning investment that has become central to PlayStation's technical strategy. The company has deployed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven upscaling system built into the PlayStation 5 Pro, and has publicly referenced Project Amethyst, an initiative focused on further machine learning rendering research. Sony is also in active development on its next console generation, with visual fidelity and rendering performance among the primary areas of focus.

Cinemersive Labs' volumetric reconstruction capability addresses a specific requirement within that programme: the ability to generate navigable three-dimensional environments from two-dimensional source material. The applications within game development include gameplay rendering, cutscene production, and virtual environment construction. The technology's commercial deployment through Parallax demonstrated its readiness as an applied product rather than a research prototype, and will have been a material factor in Sony's assessment of the acquisition.

Sony Interactive Entertainment said the deal would contribute to "advancing state of the art visual computing within games," adding that the work would encompass "applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, improve rendering techniques, and unlock new levels of visual fidelity for players."

Following completion, the Cinemersive Labs team will join SIE's Visual Computing Group, the division responsible for Sony's machine learning rendering research and development. Employee incentives formed a distinct workstream in the transaction's legal preparation, reflecting the value placed on retaining the team alongside the intellectual property.

The acquisition is part of a sustained effort by major platform holders to bring specialist AI and machine learning expertise in-house as the games industry's use of AI-assisted rendering expands. Dr Lempitsky's background in neural rendering and volumetric reconstruction - developed across both academic research and applied commercial work - aligns directly with the capabilities Sony has identified as central to its next generation of visual computing.
