ONYX Insight, a Nottingham-based company backed by Macquarie Capital, has acquired a wind turbine specialist in a deal aimed at further strengthening the company’s whole-turbine predictive maintenance platform.
Glossop-based ELEVEN-I, which was founded in 2019, specialises in condition monitoring and advanced analytics for wind turbine blades, providing performance, condition and structural health monitoring services.
The acquisition brings proven blade monitoring capabilities into ONYX’s whole-turbine predictive maintenance offering, providing operators with a unified platform from which to monitor and manage turbine risks and optimise maintenance across their fleets.
Dr John Coultate, VP of Advanced Sensing at ONYX Insight, said that "uniting blade insights with drivetrain CMS and structural health" in a single platform enabled ONYX to offer operators "a holistic understanding of their turbines that supports smarter, faster decision-making.”
Dr Coultate added that this was “a significant step forward” in helping the industry to manage risk and reliability, achieve greater operational efficiency and minimise downtime.
ONYX Insight Chief Commercial Officer Dr Zhiwei Zhang said that, with wind turbines growing in both size and complexity, “blade reliability has become a critical operational risk”, with failures not just resulting in unplanned operations and maintenance costs, but potentially escalating “into catastrophic events, including blade detachment and full turbine collapse.”
Dr Zhang continued: "Through years of research and testing, ELEVEN-I has developed cutting edge sensors and damage detection software allowing for quick data capture and analysis, ensuring difficult-to-detect structural changes are identified and blades can achieve optimal performance."
ELEVEN-I Chief Executive Bill Slatter said that the company had been founded “to help wind operators understand how their blades perform under real-world conditions" and that joining ONYX Insight would enable the company to scale this mission globally, while combining the firm’s “deep technical expertise with ONYX Insight’s industry-leading predictive analytics to enhance blade reliability globally."
ONYX Insight was acquired by Macquarie Capital in 2024, with Macquarie Senior Managing Director John Spirtos saying the firm acquired ONYX “with the intention of supporting the company in expanding its product offering to address evolving client needs.”
Fellow Macquarie Capital Senior Managing Director Ben Bailey added: "This acquisition sets ONYX Insight on a pathway towards providing solutions for combatting blade failures, which remain one of the most significant causes of maintenance cost for wind turbine operators."
