British Garden Centres, a national garden centre operator, has acquired a family-run garden centre in the South West that has been operating for more than 100 years. The acquisition of St Bridget Nurseries provides British Garden Centres with its 80th location.
St Bridget Nurseries in Exeter has been operating in the city since 1925, growing from just a single acre of land to around 100 acres. The family-run company is currently in the fourth generation of ownership by the Langdon family.
Following the acquisition by British Garden Centres, St Bridget Nurseries will be renamed Exeter Garden Centre. The deal continues a busy start to the year for British Garden Centres, which has welcomed sites in Dronfield, Grantham, Pepper Hill, Staplehurst, Knaresborough and Alton into its portfolio so far in 2026.
Charles Stubbs, founder and director at British Garden Centres, said: "Reaching our 80th centre is a momentous occasion for us, and we couldn’t be prouder. St Bridget Nurseries has a wonderful history, and as it transitions to Exeter Garden Centre, we intend to uphold and build upon its reputation for excellence, whilst carrying on the family-led values that make it such a great store in the community."
Tammy Falloon, owner of St Bridget’s Nurseries, said that, after 101 years of family ownership, and 20 years at the helm himself, the time had come to pass the garden centre onto a new owner.
He continued that the British Garden Centres team would “bring the experience, energy and vision needed to take the company to the next level”, adding that the transition to new ownership would enable “new opportunities for growth and innovation whilst continuing to offer customers first class service and building on our strong foundation.”
In the year to December 31 2024, Woodthorpe Hall Garden Centres Limited, trading as British Garden Centres, reported turnover of £85.3 million, up from £82.4 million a year earlier, while operating profits increased from £6.9 million to £7.9 million.
