Great Wines Direct (GWD), one of the UK’s leading online wine retailers, has been acquired by global commerce and distribution platform Komerz Limited in a deal that significantly strengthens the buyer's presence in the BWS (Beer, Wine & Spirits) category and builds “an advanced, data-led retail ecosystem spanning the UK and Europe.”
With more than 20 years of trading history, GWD has built a reputation as one of the UK’s most trusted wine retailers. The firm’s growth is now set to accelerate across European markets, backed by Komerz’s intelligent retail infrastructure.
Siddharth Shankar, Global COO of Komerz (pictured above), said: “This acquisition represents a defining moment for Komerz as we consolidate value across the BWS supply chain both vertically and horizontally. The combined business is projected to deliver more than £50 million in revenues across the UK and Europe over the next 18 months and establish wine as a flagship growth category for Komerz. The move is described as reinforcing Komerz’s goal of dominating the BWS sector, building on the firm’s existing partnerships with e-commerce leaders including Amazon and Ocado.

The acquisition also sees BWS experts Siddharth Shankar and David Kelly reunite, with the pair having previously worked together at premium drinks company Tails, which reached £2.8 billion in annual global BWS sales under their leadership and achieved a successful exit.
