Yorkshire pet food manufacturer Burgess Pet Care has accelerated its international growth with the acquisition of German small animal nutrition brand Bunny Nature. The acquisition is the company’s largest international deal so far, following the purchase of natural dog food brand Green Pantry and its investment in fresh dog food subscription business Tuggs.
Bunny Nature, which was founded in 1988, specialises in small animal feeds. The company has an established distribution network spanning the EU, Asia and North America, immediately providing Burgess with access to a wider customer base, supporting the group's ongoing strategy of scaling its global presence.
The acquisition, completed through an asset purchase process, is described as a significant step forward in Goole-based Burgess’ global growth strategy, with the group having increased international revenues five-fold to £12.5 million.
Post-acquisition, Burgess will preserve Bunny Nature as a distinct brand, in order to maintain its customer relationships, product quality and identity. The company’s senior leadership will remain in place, helping to ensure continuity and ongoing service for customers, partners and employees.
Mark Womersley, managing director of Burgess Pet Care, said: “Bunny Nature is a highly respected brand with genuine international reach, and its values, expertise, and reputation align perfectly with our long-term ambition to create the world's leading small animal brand.”
"What stood out to us throughout the process was the strength of its people, brand, its customer relationships and the quality of its products. We see clear opportunities to invest, to grow and to build a truly global small animal nutrition company with an unmatched offering for pets and pet owners around the world.”
Womersley added that the deal “transforms” Burgess’ global footprint, with international sales now accounting for 35 per cent of group revenue, up from the previous level of 10 per cent, and international revenue having increased from £2.5 million to £12.5 million.
Tom Roberts, Group Chairman, said: "This acquisition reflects our confidence in the future of the pet care market and is great news for the Burgess family. It builds on our recent investments in Green Pantry and Tuggs and demonstrates our commitment to backing high-quality businesses that share our values, passion for animal wellbeing, and focus on innovation. Together, these investments strengthen our portfolio of trusted pet brands and support our long-term ambition to build the world's leading small animal group."
