A busy pharmacy in Bridlington, East Yorkshire has been acquired by an experienced local operator following a confidential sales process with Christie & Co. Bridlington Pharmacy is a standard hours pharmacy, dispensing an average of around 7,300 items per month.
The pharmacy is located on The Promenade in Bridlington, a local shopping parade in the town. Bridlington Pharmacy has been owned by Anthony Onuchukwu of Medix AG Limited for the past seven years.
Onuchukwu brought the pharmacy to market as he sought to explore business opportunities outside of the sector, engaging Christie & Co to market the site for sale. Following a confidential sales process run by Christie & Co’s Tom Young, Bridlington Pharmacy has now been acquired by Emmanuel Ugboh for an undisclosed sum.
An experienced operator in the sector, Ugboh owns two other pharmacies in the area, with sites in Hartlepool and Filey.
Commenting on the sale, Tom Young, Senior Business Agent – Pharmacy at Christie & Co, said: “This pharmacy presented a fantastic opportunity for a local operator to come into a busy pharmacy which historically had been run by locum Pharmacists.”
Young continued: “Emmanuel recognised the potential of this well-located business and will no doubt take the business to the next level under his ownership.”
The sale comes amid a period of strong M&A activity in the UK pharmacy sector. In the year to June 30 2024, 1,212 UK pharmacies were acquired, a 50 per cent increase from 809 in the previous year, with close to 10 per cent of all UK pharmacies being acquired in M&A deals during the period.
Much of this activity has been driven by the increasing pressure that independent operators face, amid a profits squeeze and higher costs, enabling major chains and private equity firms to acquire a huge number of sites. However, as the acquisition of Bridlington Pharmacy (along with a number of other recent deals) highlights, there is still appetite and scope for smaller operators to expand through strategic acquisitions.
