Location tends to be a major factor for people considering buying a business. Choosing where to buy will be influenced by convenience, the local economy and the sector of interest to name but a few factors.
It can be all too easy to close off a search to a very limited area but every so often a major shake-up happens to open up new areas that buyers might never have considered before. The development of the HS2 high-speed rail network is one such change.
The government has this week unveiled the preferred route of phase two of the rail network. The tracks will head north from Birmingham along two branches and there will be new stations introduced at Toton, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester and Manchester Airport. This will be in addition to the phase one route which is to link London and Birmingham.
While the plans have faced considerable opposition – not least from those who live along part of the route – they could also revolutionise the way in which Britain does business. If the new infrastructure lives up to expectations, it could even make a London-centric Britain a thing of the past.
Companies that are currently forced to locate in London in order to access suitable employees and suppliers might find themselves able to relocate further north where their expenses are likely to be considerably less due to the reduction in travel time that the network will bring.
City council leader in Leeds, Keith Wakefield, believes that the network will bring considerable benefits to the city: "It will strengthen Leeds' position as the northern transport hub, and unlock major investment, job opportunities and connectivity to the rest of the country."
Construction is set to begin in the middle of the next decade, meaning that the line will not be open before 2030 at the earliest. This is a long way off, but those planning future business ventures might want to keep in mind the way in which the line could – if successful – alter the way in which the UK does business.
