Local information: County Durham, North East

County Durham is both a ceremonial county and a unitary district, the county town being Durham, famous for its 11th century castle, Norman cathedral and university - arguably the third oldest in the UK. The ceremonial county borders Tyne and Wear, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Northumberland.

The county has a strong industrial heritage: the mining industry was at one point the centre of its economy, employing almost the whole of the non-agricultural population, and exporting from the Port of Sunderland complex, which was contructed in the 1850s and eventually also became the largest shipbuilding town in the world.

Durham city was captured by a Norman army in 1069, and despite the assassination of the Norman earl Robert de Comines, escaped the subsequent cataclysmic raids designed to subjugate such rebellions, leaving the area with numerous fine examples of Norman and pre-Norman architecture, including the churches of Darlington, Hartlepool, and St Andrew.
