Local information: Argyll, Scotland

Argyll, known historically as Argyle, is a region of western Scotland. The region of Argyll and Bute covers the second largest administrative area of any Scottish council. When its islands are taken into account, the area has over 3,000 miles (4,800 km) of coastline – more than the whole of France.

The county of Argyll was abolished in 1975 and the region was divided between the Highland and Strathclyde regions. Argyll and Bute, a local government district, was created in the Strathclyde region – this included most of Argyll and the Isle of Bute from the former county of the same name. The Ballachulish, Kinlochleven and Ardnamurchan areas of Argyll became part of the Highland’s Lochaber District. In 1996 a new unitary council area of Argyll and Bute was created. The change of boundaries included part of the former Strathcylde district of Dumbarton.

Argyll’s most notable residents include Patrick MacKellar. Born in Argyllshire in 1717, he went onto become America’s most respected military engineer.
