A new business manifesto has called for the next UK government to do more to achieve “a more confident and more enterprising Britain”.
The manifesto – ‘A Business Plan for Britain’ – was published by the British Chambers of Commerce. Its aim is to help Britain fulfil is economic potential, specifically looking to make the nation, its businesses and its workforce more skilled and enterprising.
As Labour and the Tories (and other parties, sort of) prepare to do battle over the coming nine months leading up to the 2015 general election, the UK’s businesses will be watching on keenly to see how party policies could affect them.
Richard Wright, the executive director of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, said: "The decisions taken during the term of the next Parliament will have a profound impact on the UK’s ability to grow. We need a business plan for Britain, with governments and authorities across the UK and in the regions focusing their attention on creating the best possible environment for growth and enterprise.
"Over the next five years, we can become a more confident, more enterprising, more skilled trading nation - or retreat into slow but very real decline. The Business Plan for Britain is practical, pragmatic and achievable.”
Developing and retaining the brightest young talent was cited as one of the key things that the next government must focus on. Growing global trade potential, driving down business costs and taxes, and supporting long-term investment made up the majority of the rest of the manifesto.
It is this last point that will interest business buyers; many will be keen to see government-led financial support for business growth, which will often come in the form of mergers of acquisitions.
