Sharing a near 100-mile border with England, Scotland covers around a third of Great Britain. A geographically and economically diverse country, Scotland has major cities including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, as well as the Highlands and nearly 800 islands and archipelagos. While Scotland's economy was once dominated by heavy industries like shipbuilding, coal mining, and steel production, it has since diversified. In 2024, Scotland is a major global financial centre and popular tourist destination, with a significant but transitioning oil and gas sector. The country is now actively pivoting towards renewable energy industries, particularly offshore wind and hydrogen, as it seeks to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability
After a flat period in 2022-2023, Scotland's economy showed moderate growth in the first half of 2024, with GDP increasing by 0.5% in Q1 and 0.6% in Q23. However, growth eased to 0.3% in the three months to July.
Despite economic challenges, business activity indicators have shown improvement in 2024 compared to 2023. 83% of firms reported increased costs in Q1 2024, up from 78% in the previous quarter. Employee costs and wage increases were the most significant factors. Capital investment levels remain a concern, with Scotland lagging behind other advanced economies.
