Administrators appointed to collapsed publisher Lion Hudson, one of the UK’s biggest Christian book publishers, are exploring a sale of all or parts of the business.
The Bookseller reports that the Oxford-based publisher, which shed around two-thirds of its staff earlier this year, has appointed FRP Advisory.
Founded in 1971 by David and Pat Alexander, Lion Hudson publishes books for adults and children under five imprints: Lion Books, Lion Children’s Books, Lion Fiction, Candle Books and Monarch Books.
The company is known for producing The Lion Handbook to the Bible, which has sold more than three million copies worldwide.
The Times reported that the house, which has been restructuring, has seen falling sales in markets including Brazil and Mexico.
A spokesperson for FRP told the Bookseller: “The administrators are working with management and continue to trade the business as normal. All the staff that were with Lion Hudson when it went into administration continue to work for the company. The business continues to liaise with suppliers, authors, booksellers and other parties while the administrators market the business for sale, as part of the plans for seeking new investment."
Suzanne Wilson-Higgins, managing director of Lion Hudson, said: "Lion Hudson continues to trade as normal while work continues with our advisors to focus on the business, our array of loyal authors, publishing arrangements and of course staff.
"This is a long-standing publishing business with a unique history and offering and we look forward to working with our advisors towards the next stage in its evolution to ensure the best possible outcome for all involved to safeguard the interests of our authors and another generation of readers both in Britain and across the world."
Last month Lion Hudson made 35 of its staff redundant, leaving 18 remaining. Some of the former employees have launched a new publishing venture, Lion Sales Services.
