News has emerged this afternoon (7 November 2014) that Leeds United Football Club has been handed a winding-up petition by Ford & Warren Solicitors.
The matter is in relation to about £150,000 in unpaid fees, and can be traced back to when the former Chelsea chairman Ken Bates, 82, owned the club.
The petition is scheduled to be heard in Leeds Combined Court on 13 January 2015.
GFH Capital bought the club from Bates in December 2012, before Italian businessman Massimo Cellino purchased a controlling share in April 2014.
Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Nick Collins, senior partner at Ford & Warren said: “This is not a dispute with Mr Cellino. This is something he has inherited from the previous ownership of the club.
“We bear no ill-will towards Mr Cellino and we wish him well. I genuinely hope we can resolve this amicably but we must do what is necessary to protect our clients’ position.”
A previous attempt to serve the club with a winding-up petition by Sport Capital Limited in April this year was dismissed with an order that the company pay the Petitioner’s costs.
The Elland Road-based club, which is currently playing in the Championship, has a turnover of £28.5 million listed as last recorded in their accounts, with profits of £23 million. Operating profits stand at minus £12 million.
