An unseasonably mild winter has been blamed for pushing ice rink business Reflective Ice Ltd into liquidation.
The company has been running Winter Wonderland in Colchester, where it provided an ice rink for visitors. However, the high winds and warm temperatures – along with a similar forecast for the next week – has forced the company to close the ice rink on several days over the past week.
These closures have seen it become “financially impossible to continue with the attraction” and the business has cancelled all events.
A statement from the director of Reflective Ice, Ben Payne, said: “You can’t control the weather. I am looking at a rink melting away with water all over it, and it is not safe to skate on at the moment, and there’s not much you can do.”
A further statement from the business added: “This decision has been taken with deep regret as it will have a major impact on its staff, partners and customers. Reflective Ice Ltd sincerely thanks their staff, customers, business partners and supporters.”
It had been hoped that up to 70,000 visitors would attend the Winter Wonderland park over its opening from 27 November to 3 January, but this prediction proved irrelevant when the warmer weather and problems with the ice rink kicked in.
