Waste management company Alex Smiles has entered administration after losing a major contract.
Based in Sunderland, the business specialised in collection, recycling and processing waste materials.
At one point the company had employed as many as 80 staff. Following the administration a total of 50 staff have been made redundant, while a few have stayed on to help with the winding-up process.
Alex Smiles' problems were caused by the loss of a major contract. Baker Tilly, who has been appointed to handle the insolvency process, is currently looking at the firm's assets in an effort to sell what it can in order to pay creditors.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that the firm was subject to three legal notices from the Environment Agency regarding the over-accumulation of waste of its site.
“Since the end of February we have served the company with three legal notices which means they cannot now accept any more waste onto the site and must reduce levels of certain types of waste back to the amounts set out in their environmental permit,” said an Environment Agency spokesman.
The news of Alex Smiles' administration comes shortly after its sister firm, Recycling Logistics Ltd, closed its doors amid financial distress.
