One of the most interesting properties to be put up for sale following the administration of the von Essen Hotels Group is a 900-year old castle.
Amberley Castle near Arundel in West Sussex has 19 bedrooms, and is listed as one of the top ten castle hotels in the world on gayot.com. Some of its luxurious rooms boast whirlpool spa baths and four-poster beds, whilst the hotel itself comprises a tennis court, croquet lawn, two restaurants, landscaped grounds and an 18-hole putting course.
Following the administration of von Essen, which owns 28 hotels across the UK and France, Barclays and Lloyds Banking Group appointed Ernst and Young to deal with the sale of the portfolio.
An Ernst and Young spokesperson said that it would be 'business as usual' at Amberley Castle.
“The administrators are working with the company to develop the appropriate strategy to take the business forward.
“If people have weddings, parties and conferences booked at the hotel they can be assured that these events will not be affected in any way,” said the spokesperson. A bidding war is expected for the hotel.
A spokesman from West Sussex County Council told The Argus, “Amberley Castle is a very key and important tourist attraction and provides a number of jobs in the local area. We hope that a buyer will be found for the castle as soon as possible.”
