The Scottish estate where the heroic Dambusters squadron tested their bouncing bombs has been put up for sale.
The Glenstriven estate in Argyll is now a commercial operation that offers exemplary shooting and sailing facilities. The sailing takes place on the iconic Loch Striven, where the 617 Squadron carried out the top secret, fine-tuning operations for the pioneering explosives.
The estate and its buildings had been somewhat neglected until 1981, when the Blacker family bought it and developed it as a leisure activity venue. Speaking from his home in South Africa, Peter Blacker said the estate had served its purpose as their family home and now, operating entirely as a business, was a prime time to sell up.
The Loch was chosen as the test site for the bombs due to its similarity to the target German landscapes. Local people were moved off the estate during the testing in order to maintain its secrecy, but the telltale signs of the historic work that was carried out there can still be seen in the scorch marks on some of the rocks surrounding the lake.
The estate comprises 50,000 acres of land, with nine properties. The main estate house has eight bedrooms and three reception rooms. Four of the other properties are leased to sitting tenants, while the remaining houses serve as holiday lets.
Glenstriven is being sold either as one complete lot, or as eight separate lots. Prices range from £235,000+ to £2,500,000.
