In an ongoing sale of under-utilised Cumbria police buildings over £1.7 million has been raised so far to help plug a hole in its budget.
The sale was started over two years ago following an assessment of police stations, offices and buildings to see if they were worth the cash and met the needs of communities and local squads. A number of properties are still in line to be disposed of according to a report.
Stations that have been earmarked for a future sale include Wigton, Cockermouth, Keswick, Maryport, Cleator Moor, Egremont and Alston. Barrow’ Market Street station will also be sold off at some point in the future, according to the crime commissioner’s office, after the new station has been finished and is useable.
The total sum achieved so far from the sales is £1,771,100. Individual lots have included Keswick police station sold for £327,000, with pub operator JD Wetherspoon set to open a bar on the site. Dalton police station was sold for an undisclosed amount last October and will be transformed into a home, after planning consent was given.
In response to community leaders expressing their regret at the closures, the police said it was a “small number of buildings” that were “under-occupied and under-used”. Also visitor numbers to stations have fallen, and with better technology police are able to do more when away from the stations.
A new £1.8 million Barrow police station, which will be the headquarters covering Barrow and Ulverston, is now under construction. The three-storey building will be the base for about 270 staff.
