A Suffolk haulage company has released its former premises, including a yard and several other buildings, for sale following a large-scale restructuring of its business last year.
Derek Cooper Transport, which was founded in 1950, is set to sell the parcel of land as it considers how to change the focus of the business for years to come.
The site covers more than 2.65 acres and is located in Risby, approximately five miles west of Bury St Edmunds and next to the A14. Included on the land are two modern warehouses covering 12,000 square feet, a fitted vehicle workshop, a two-storey office building and a large yard with packing area.
Auctioneering firm Cheffins is marketing the plot and handling its sale.
Philip Woolner, Cheffins’ managing partner, said he expected the sale to attract a lot of attention from local businesses, particularly “logistics specialists and warehouse operators”.
He added: “East Anglia is becoming an increasingly important logistical hub and we are seeing increased enquiries for warehousing and industrial units and with average prices at the site around £5.80 per square foot, this represents good value within this fluid market."
The Cheffins Machinery team will also be holding an auction on the property on 30 September in order to find new homes for founder Derek Cooper’s vintage machinery collection.
Cooper passed away in 2010 at the age of 80.
He founded Derek Cooper Transport in 1950 and together with his wife Vera built up the business at Red Lodge, a location chosen to capitalise on work from new airbases built at Mildenhall, Lakenheath and Stradishall.
At its peak, Derek Cooper Transport employed more than 300 staff and had a fleet of 168 lorries across seven depots as far afield as Nottinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
