An abandoned former hotel in Carlisle has been left to stand empty for the past decade. It is ownerless and The Queen’s Crown Estate solicitors won’t manage or market it for sale, but a potential buyer can independently make an offer for it.
The derelict Central Plaza Hotel on Victoria Viaduct, considered a “potential deathtrap” by the locals, is currently only occupied by teenagers up to no good or used as shelter by the homeless.
The Carlisle City Council did some emergency maintenance on the site two years ago, but it appears set to remain caught in a legal limbo, with its increasingly derelict state becoming more and more expensive to fix up as time goes on.
The Grade II listed hotel closed its doors in 2004, and was owned by Goldfern Properties Ltd, which itself entered dissolution in 2013.
Colin Glover, the leader of the Carlisle City Council, and his deputy Elsie Martlew are now calling for the issue to be addressed. Mrs Martlew wants the council to enter discussions with the Crown Estate solicitors about the hotel’s future, and Mr Glover suggests a local developer could be brought in.
Speaking to News & Star, Mr Glover said: “It’s one of those situations where the council in isolation will not have a solution but we need to have discussions with somebody who may have an idea of how it can be used.
“If there’s a willing developer who wants to come to the council with an acceptable idea we’d support them.”
