A North Yorkshire police station is being bought by a developer for an undisclosed sum, to be changed into retirement accommodation.
Ripon Police Station will move to new premises within the area in the next year and a half after the sale of the North Street property.
The North Yorkshire Police has signed a conditional contract with property developer CFK Developments, who will work with McCarthy & Stone to redevelop the site depending on a successful application for planning permission.
New locations in Ripon for the police station are already being looked into.
Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire Julia Mulligan said: “The decision to dispose of the land and buildings at North Street has been in place for some time as part of our long-term estates strategy, so I am very pleased that we have signed this contract and can progress according to plan.”
The plans to sell the property were initially reported by the Ripon Gazette in August 2013, after it had been identified as a “disposal opportunity”.
Amid a £30 million funding shortfall, the North Yorkshire Police force had reduced front counter opening hours at the Ripon station by about 50 per cent in the summer of 2011. So where before the front desk had been open on the weekends and 12 hours a day, come July 2011 weekend open times were cut completely, with office open hours during the week also greatly reduced.
