Encompassing the counties of Tyne & Wear, County Durham, Northumberland and some of North Yorkshire, the North East of England is home to major cities and towns including Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Sunderland, Durham, Darlington and Middlesbrough. Historically, the North East has been a major centre of UK industry, although this declined during the 20 th century. Today, despite continuing economic struggles, the region has reinvented itself as a thriving area for arts, culture and media, with a strong tourist economy.

In recent years, the area has seen strong M&A deal volumes (hitting a decade high of 350 deals in 2019), but has simultaneously suffered from declining deal values. In 2018, the North East reported deal value of £3.3 billion, however this declined 65 per cent over the next year to £1.2 billion in 2019, sliding further to £690 million last year. However, with the area an increasingly popular region for several high-growth sectors, along with strong public investment, dealmaking in the North East could see a significant return to strength over the next few years.
