The North of England is a large area of the UK comprising the regions of the North East, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber. The area has a population of close to 15 million and is home to 17 of the UK’s 69 cities, including major urban areas such as Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle. The North of England was central to the Industrial Revolution, with many of its towns and cities serving as hubs of industry. Heavy industry dominated during the 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by trades such as shipbuilding, mining and steel production.

The North of England’s economy was severely damaged by the decline of heavy industry, resulting in what has become known as the North-South divide. While this divide is still seen as a major issue, some areas of the North have seen strong economic growth in recent years, driven by the public sector, service economy and infrastructure spending.
