The South of England is a large area of the UK accounting for the southernmost part of England. The area, which covers Greater London, the South East, South West and East Anglia, covers around 25 per cent of the UK and is home to approximately 40 per cent of its population. Traditionally, the South has been economically and culturally distinct from the North of England and the Midlands, with the South’s relative economic dominance giving rise to the phenomenon of the North-South divide.

Much of the South’s economy is centered around London, which boasts huge industries in finance, technology, science, tourism and the service sector, among others. The South East remains strongly influenced by London and transport links have encouraged industries such as space research and high-technology to develop. Elsewhere, East Anglia has remained a largely agricultural region, but has also developed a strong trade in technology, while the South West is dominated by tourism, the service industry and manufacturing.
