A civil engineering firm based in Aberdeenshire has fallen into administration due to a decline in demand for building services across Scotland.
Les Taylor Contractors, the civil engineering and quarry company, and its subsidiary firm, J. G. Fowlie (Contractors) Ltd, located in Mintlaw, were amongst the area's biggest employers.
Specialising in drainage, quarrying and demolition, Les Taylor Contractors employed more than 200 people and had been involved with major construction projects across the north east of the country, such as renovation of the former Caley warehouse and the demolition of the Peterhead-based St Peter Street flats.
Each of the firms has found trading increasingly problematic in the current economic climate, and around 164 workers were warned that redundancy was likely as early as last year.
Colin Dempster and Andrew Davison of accountants Ernst & Young were appointed as joint administrators to both firms at the end of last week.
Mr Dempster said, “Employees met with the receivers, when they were regretfully informed that the majority had lost their jobs. The decline of the businesses was such that we had no option other than to make these unfortunate job cuts.
“Some staff have been retained to assist with securing and in gathering assets. We are now focused on realising assets on behalf of the companies’ creditors,” he added.
