Administrators are currently meeting to determine the immediate future of boat building company, Orkney Boats Limited, after it fell into administration this week.
The company, which is based in Ford Lane Business Park, in Arundel, West Sussex, has been suffering badly since the recession, generating very few orders for new boats.
The company's founder and director, Chris Powell, said it was an exceptionally disappointing situation for the business, which he first started up in 1973. He said that the Southampton Boat Show, which they attended in August, had previously been a healthy source of business - but not this year.
"There were simply no buyers at the show," said Mr Powell. "Since this last recession, there have been no more orders coming in."
When the company was at its peak, it was the UK's largest maker and supplier of small-scale fishing boats, and sold its models to markets around the world. In its 38 years of operation it has built more tan 14,000 craft, ranging from 11 to 27 feet, many of which are still in use today.
Administrators have been appointed to the business from Portland Business & Finance Solutions, who have been holding meetings this week to discuss options.
