One of Britain’s most venerable supercar companies, Bristol Cars, may have reached the end of the road as it collapsed into administration yesterday.
Tom MacLennan and Trevor Binyon of RSM Tenon have been appointed as administrators and have begun their search for a buyer to keep the brand alive.
Originally spun off from the Bristol Aeroplane Company in 1946, the luxury car company began life with a team of fighter plane engineers producing high quality, handmade classics that included the 400 and the Brigand. These were followed by the most well known model, the Bristol Blenheim, in 1961, and which is still in production today.
The most recent model is the 1,000 horsepower Fighter T, powered by the huge V10 from the Dodge Viper SRT-10.
The company is noted for its reputation for building highly comfortable, durable and reliable vehicles, serviceable by people rather than machines. Bristol Cars were the only automotive manufacturer left in the world that made its vehicles entirely by hand, with the proud tagline, “handbuilt cars for individuals”.
The company has neither agents nor distributors and built each car to its customer’s specifications. Though still collected by rock stars, eccentrics, and entrepreneurs – Liam Gallagher and Richard Branson both own Bristol models - the marque could never recover its former popularity and it is believed that only 20 vehicles a year have been selling.
Tom MacLennan urges interested parties to make contact with him as soon as possible to secure the future of this iconic British brand.
