An independent luxury car manufacturer that has been building customised high-end vehicles in Bristol since 1946 has entered administration.
Bristol Cars told employees the news of the administration on Thursday evening, after Tom MacLennan and Trevor Binyon from RSM Tenon had been appointed as joint administrators. Mr MacLennan and Mr Binyon said that they were launching a confident search of a buyer for what they said was a landmark British brand and industry.
The manufacturer operates a factory in Filton, in the north of Bristol, and has just one show room, located in Kensington in London.
Mr MacLennan said, "While there have been a number of immediate redundancies due to the financial position of the company, we are maintaining the sales and service operations so customers will continue to be supported."
"We would urge any interested parties to make contact with us as quickly as possible and are confident that we can secure the future of this iconic British brand."
The company was started soon after the end of World War II, after the Bristol Aeroplane Company - which had provided many of the aircraft required during the war - foresaw an excess of labour capacity and moved into automotive manufacturing.
The company's present owner, Toby Silverton, said they have an output of around 150 cars every year. In the past their models have included the famed Fighter and the Blenheim.
