Glaisyers LLP, a Birmingham-headquartered law firm dating back to the 19th century, has fallen into administration. The collapse of the longstanding firm was attributed to a number of factors, along with rising costs.
Established in 1870 and based on Birmingham’s New Street, Glaisyers LLP was principally a legal aid care practice, whilst also providing private client work, including personal injury and litigation services.
Despite being such a longstanding practice, however, administrators said that the firm had "experienced a number of challenges, exacerbated by rising costs" over recent years. They added that, despite the firm undertaking “significant efforts to reduce overheads” it continued to face sustained losses and it ultimately proved impossible to deliver a solvent solution.
Gareth David Wilcox and Charles Hamilton Turner of Opus Restructuring LLP were subsequently appointed as joint administrators of Glaisyers LLP on July 31 2025. Following their appointment, the joint administrators undertook an accelerated M&A process which secured a sale of work in progress and certain other assets to two law firms.
The firm’s family or childcare matters are now to be handled by Cartwright King Solicitors, while civil litigation cases have been transferred to Davisons Law. The sale of these assets has secured 14 jobs, while providing continuity for its client base, which the administrators said “was vitally important, given the governance and compliance requirements in this profession".
A spokesperson for the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) said: "We are aware of the firm's situation as they have to keep us up to date. All firms have to close in accordance with our rules, which are there to protect the interests of current and former clients. It is only if those interests are at risk that we would become involved."
In accounts for the year to March 31 2024, Glaisyers LLP’s total assets were valued at around £650,000, with total members’ interests totalling slightly under £140,000.
