A leading Devon premium chocolate company that had previously provided high-end chocolate to Harrods has entered administration.
Managers at Browne's Chocolates in Okehampton told the 30 staff of the firm on Monday that the company had been put into the hand of administrators and that they were to go home.
The news was confirmed by a representative of the Okehampton Chamber of Commerce, who said that few further details had been given. She said that she did not know that identity of the administrator, and that it had not been divulged whether they were looking to sell the company as a going concern.
The high-end chocolatier has been based in the central Devon town since 1993, specialising in the manufacture of handmade truffles, after-dinner mints, mint thins and humbugs.
The closure of the chocolate maker marks a continuation of a very bleak period for food manufacturing in the town, which has already seen 232 jobs lost when Polestar Foods' Okehampton Deserts closed at the beginning of February. Robert Wiseman Dairies has also announced that it is to close in April, adding another 67 positions to the town's recent job losses.
