A luxury golf club in Hertfordshire has entered administration after HM Revenue & Customs lodged a winding-up petition against the estate.
Brocket Hall Estate is a sprawling 543-acre site that includes a five-star restaurant, a wedding venue and of course several golf courses.
But on 31 March this year Peter Holder, Anne O'Keefe and Nick Cropper from business advisory firm AlixPartners Services UK were appointed as joint administrators to the site's operator, Brocket Hall International (BHI), following a period of poor trading.
Mr Holder commented: “Brocket Hall and its magnificent grounds represents a fantastic opportunity in the luxury hospitality and leisure sector.
“We are confident there will be a significant number of interested parties in acquiring this truly unique and historic estate. We would also like to go on record to thank the staff for their continued support and professionalism during this process.”
The estate is the original home of former British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston. But it was leased to BHI in 1996 after its then owner Lord Brocket was jailed for insurance fraud. The administration of the operator, BHI, effectively means that this lease is now up for sale.
News of the administration came as something of a surprise after just last year the club announced a half million pound investment into a fleet of greenkeeping machinery and golf buggies.
