Gaming company Merkur has announced it has purchased Casino MK in Milton Keynes and plans to reopen the venue, creating jobs and expanding leisure options for the local community.
The casino, once one of the largest in the UK, ceased trading in April 2025 after its previous operator, Aspers UK Holdings Limited, went into administration. At the time, administrators admitted that the venue had struggled to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Changes in customer habits and underperforming sites made it difficult for Aspers to return to pre-pandemic trading levels, leading to financial challenges and closure.
The financial details of Merkur’s acquisition have not been disclosed, but the move marks an important step for the company, which already has its national headquarters based in Milton Keynes. Merkur confirmed it will begin a recruitment drive, offering roles to both new applicants and former casino staff.
When the casino reopens, visitors will be able to enjoy a full range of gaming experiences, including blackjack, poker, roulette and modern slot machines. The venue will also undergo upgrades to meet Merkur’s brand standards, ensuring customers have access to a modern and engaging entertainment environment.
This acquisition builds on Merkur’s recent success with its Aberdeen casino, launched in 2023, which the company says has seen strong demand from customers.
Mark Schertle, COO of Merkur Casino UK, said: “The venue has always played an important role in the local leisure and entertainment market. Our goal is to reopen as quickly and smoothly as possible. We are proud to be creating more jobs here in Milton Keynes, which is also home to our UK headquarters.”
The reopening is expected to provide a welcome boost to both the local economy and the city’s nightlife.
