Major independent city food stores in Brighton are under threat after parent company, Taj Mahal Natural Food Ltd, fell into administration.
The firm runs the Taj food stores on the city’s Western Road and St James’s Streets and, despite the fall into administration, the owner claimed that it was “business as usual”.
BDO has been called in as administrator to the business, but the owner of the Taj stores said that all the staff working in the Brighton stores still have their jobs. Administrators claim they are seeking a buyer for the business who is willing to take it on as a going concern.
The company owner Amir Khan hoped to abate the rumours being spread about the administration by stating: “Taj is still running and will be open as usual. We are a Brighton institution. We employ between 30 and 40 people and it is business as usual”. He continued, “Taj Mahal Ltd owns the stores. The parent company had a bit of issues with the banks but all our staff are still with us. Trade is as good as ever.”
Local residents claim that the Taj stores are finding it hard to compete with larger chain stores such as Sainsbury’s, which has been allowed to open two stores with a half-a-mile radius.
