Exclusive Colchester retreat, The Lifehouse Spa, has entered administration, less than one year after it first opened.
The £30 million spa, which employs 157 people, has seen a string of celebrities visit during its year of business. Managing director, Marco Trufelli, said that business just had not been enough to be viable, however, and that the administration had come as a huge disappointment to everyone who has helped sustain the business.
"All [of our] business partners have engaged with the team in trying to make Lifehouse a viable operation, in what has been a very difficult market," said Trufelli.
"The message from the team and the administrators is it is service as usual and they will continue to work with professionalism to ensure the quality of the Lifehouse experience is maintained."
Administrators have been appointed from financial services firm, Grant Thornton UK LLP, and they will be running the business a normal while they carry out a search for a buyer.
The spa is located in 130-acre grounds and has 89 bedrooms, 35 treatment rooms, a gym, swimming pool and other facilities. The staff has been informed of the current situation, but no redundancies have been made, and bookings scheduled for the Christmas period and gift vouchers will be honoured.
