GHA Coaches has entered administration, rendering its 320-strong workforce jobless, after recently receiving a winding-up petition from the HMRC for an unpaid tax bill.
The company's directors, Gareth and Arwyn Lloyd Davies, had attempted to find an emergency funding package to address the issue, but ultimately failed, with the company entering administration on Wednesday.
Based in Ruabon, North East Wales, the company ran 230 buses on school and commercial bus routes across north Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire. With the company now closed, the situation has had an immediate impact on customers who used the buses regularly.
Jason Bell, of administrators Grant Thornton, said they will “explore all options in terms of bringing any part of the business back to life”.
“Our immediate responsibility is to look after the interests of the creditors,” he added.
The administrators are also working with the affected local councils to put contingency plans in place in order to reduce service disruptions.
In an update at 1pm on Friday 15 July, the BBC said Wrexham has had up to 22 public route services cancelled. The main counties affected are focusing on the school transport, with 95 per cent of the school transport operating on Thursday and 100 per cent on Friday in Denbighshire.
The failure of GHA has had a larger impact than first thought, the BBC reported.
