In line with the BBC's move to Salford, the old Manchester headquarters has been put up for sale.
Once the company takes possession of the new premises at Mediacity, the New Broadcasting House property, which the BBC has occupied since 1976, will be 'surplus to requirements,' so a buyer is being sought.
Property consultants Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) have been appointed to look for potential buyers for the 5.4 acre Oxford Road site, which is being marketed as a 'major mixed-use development opportunity.'
The building sits near the city's universities and a planning document for the site, developed in conjunction with Manchester City Council, suggests a range of commercial and residential uses for it.
The sale of the building, which was originally designed for radio and TV production, has been planned for some time but marketing only began earlier this week.
The BBC's new home at Mediacity is spread over 36 acres of land alongside the Manchester Ship Canal. About 2,300 staff, including 800 from Manchester, will move to the new base in 2011.
lan Bainbridge, Portfolio Director for BBC North said, “The BBC has occupied the building since 1976 and is fully committed to strengthening its presence in the region.
“The move to Salford will add value for audiences across the UK, deliver economic benefits to the area and build a world-class media talent pool in the North West,” he added.
